Essential Tips for Taking Care of Your Ties

Tie Care

A well constructed, professionally designed tie can bring an entire outfit together.  It also allows you to easily diversify your wardrobe simply through mixing and matching of ties with suits and shirts.  Because of their versatility and wearability, it is essential that you truly understand tie care to ensure a long life for your accessories.

When removing your tie after a full day at work, or a long evening gala, refuse the temptation to just yank it off!  Untying the tie (i.e removing it in the reverse manner in which it was put on) will help maintain the shape of the tie and prevent snags.

When storing your ties, many men roll up their ties or stuff them in a drawer.  The best way to preserve your ties is to drape it over a coat hanger.  Hanging your ties in the right manner allows for creases and folds to fall out.

Tie Cleaning

We are all aware that a small stain can ruin any tie!  In the event that your tie does stain, do the following:

Grab a seltzer water or club soda (ideal).  Although, if you happen to get greasy materials on your tie, talcum powder will be a lot more effective.  The powder will absorb the grease.  After a few hours, you can brush off the remaining residue and then clean it with a soft cloth.

If you take your ties to a dry cleaner, specifically request that they don’t press your ties.  Most dry cleaners do, but ironing a tie presses down on its rolled edges and ruins its shape.

Do you want to have a selection of ties where you are not worried about having to clean them? At The Dark Knot, each of our ties come with tie clips that fasten your ties to your shirt buttons, so that they never sway, and hence, are unlikely to get stained! How to Get Rid of Wrinkles

While ironing ties should be avoided, attempts should be made to remove wrinkles.  The best way to get wrinkles out of your tie without ironing it is the use of steam.  The easiest way to get this job done is to leave a hot shower running for a few minutes before you step in, and just allow the steam to flatten the wrinkles out of the tie.

And there you have it!  Hopefully this page has provided you with enough information on how to take care of your neckties!
