While socks are a great way to add personality to your ensembles, you want to ensure that your socks are balanced out with the rest of your clothing, so that your outfit is not too loud on all fronts. Therefore, balance with regard to color, pattern & tonality is critical! 

If you are wearing patterned pants, for example, you would do your best to avoid wearing argyle, checkered socks. Similarly, colorful pants and a colorful dress shirt are best worn when not accompanied by brighter colored socks. Just as with anything else, moderation is absolutely key. It is important to use your discerning eye when judging overall attire balance between color, pattern and tonality. 

When matching colorful / statement socks to the rest of your attire, it is best to complement other colors in your attire, as opposed to directly matching them. For example, a blue or pink shirt will be perfectly complemented by burgundy socks, while a lilac shirt would work best with blue or green socks.

General Rules Of Thumb For Matching Colorful Socks

If you are looking for your attire to flow seamlessly, opting for a pair of socks that are a shade darker or lighter than your pants is you best option. As long as your pants and socks are within a similar hue range, you will have a fairly seamless transition from pants to socks, helping to create a smooth, elongated look with minimal breaks. This is ideal for more formal settings such as work, presentations or an important meeting. 

As stated above, if the rest of your attire is fairly muted, now is the perfect time to strut those colorful socks! For example, contrast the muted tone of your conservative charcoal grey & navy suit with colorful polka dot socks (assuming that they are being worn to a cocktail party or somewhere slightly less formal than work). 

Generally, the less formal your attire, the bolder your socks combinations can be! 

• For office attire, you are best off wearing your conservative but safe charcoal grey or navy blue socks.

• For business casual attire, in a more relaxed office environment, you can add some color with colorful argyle checkered, stripes or polka dot patterns.

• In more casual settings, such as dressing up for the evenings, a party or on date night, try incorporating a pair of socks that are more playful and colorful, such as a floral pattern or something quirky like hot air balloon patterns!

Match Socks To Your Tie Or Pocket Square

Looking to add some kick & flair to your suit in a less formal capacity? Matching socks to your ties or pocket squares is a great way to bring together the rest of the ensemble. You can try and coordinate with color, pattern or both. 

Length Of Socks Should Match Formality Of Occasion

As a general rule of thumb, the less formal the occasion, the lower your cut of socks can be. Hence, lower cut socks are generally best for more athletic purposes. Slightly above the ankle cut can work for casual settings, while business casual and formal settings would require mid or high calf socks!
